What makes you the Next Music Star?
I believe I’m the next music star because I’m not just interested in recreating what we’ve already felt, I want to create something people haven’t felt yet. We live in a time where so much of culture looks backward for inspiration: remaking old stories, recreating old sounds, and trying to bring back memories. I want my music to do the opposite. I want to create new memories through music, songs that become part of our lives and moments we’ll remember years from now. For me, music is more than communication. It’s a way of telling stories about what it means to be human and creating a connection where someone can hear a song and realize, “I’m not the only one who feels this way.” I’m a Nigerian-American woman who grew up between two worlds, and for a long time, I didn’t feel like I completely fit into either one. I know I’m not the only person who has felt like they don’t belong in one box. So, I want to create a new boxes and invite other people to question the ones given to them.
What do you love about music and performing?
The real question is, what do I not love about music? When a song is blasting in my ears, I get lost somewhere between the lyrics and the thunderous beat. I drift into another world. For three minutes, I get to let go. It’s just me and the music, following the artist’s story as if I lived that song myself. I can become a million different things and at the same time, become nothing but myself. And most importantly, I don’t feel alone. That’s what I love about music. It can take something deeply personal and somehow make millions of people feel it together. Somewhere across the world, someone can be listening to the exact same song, feeling the same heartbeat, moving to the same rhythm. And performing is when I get to become part of that exchange. I get to take what lives inside of me and give it to someone else and hopefully give them those same three minutes where they can let go, feel something, and know they’re not alone either. That connection is what I love most.
Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?
There are so many insanely talented artists that every year I discover someone new and think, “I would love to create with them.” But the artists who have shaped me most come from both sides of who I am. On my Nigerian side, I have to give flowers to my OGs—Tiwa Savage and Don Jazzy. They showed me that African music could be powerful, global, and still deeply rooted in where you come from. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Tems. I love the way she creates a world around her music and makes vulnerability feel powerful. Then there’s my American side. And I grew up obsessed with Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé. They taught me so much about vocal expression, artistry, and becoming a complete performer—not just a singer. And if we’re talking about a dream performance, I would absolutely love to share a mic and a stage with Chris Brown. His ability to combine music, movement, and performance is something I really admire. Theres lots to choose from and my answer would vary on the day.
What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?
As an independent artist, every dollar I’ve earned from my professional and academic work has gone into my music. I’ve already created a six-month plan to give my artistry the investment it deserves. For a long time, I was afraid to give myself a real shot. I was taught to see my education as my safety net and the practical path forward. But I’ve realized my creativity deserves to be a path, too. I would invest the $10,000 directly into my music career, my upcoming EP, professional content, music videos, marketing, and opportunities to reach new audiences. My goal isn’t simply to spend $10,000 and release songs, but to turn that investment into momentum that continues long after the prize is gone. Whether I win this competition or another opportunity comes along, my six-month plan is happening. But this prize would allow me to execute it at a level I couldn’t reach alone. To me, this wouldn’t just be prize money. It would be someone saying, “We believe you deserve a real shot.”
