What makes you the Next Music Star?
What makes me the next music star is that I’m a complete artist. A performer, songwriter, producer, and storyteller with a sound, vision, and presence that sets me apart. This year alone, I’ve performed 31 shows, including major stages like SXSW in Texas and SummerStage Harlem Week, while continuing to write, produce, release music and grow my audience independently. My music is rooted in R&B, soulful storytelling and real experiences, but my goal is bigger than making songs. I want people to feel something when they hear me and remember me when the song is over. This year has been about growing as an artist, refining my sound, and building momentum with every opportunity that’s come my way. Now I’m ready to take that energy from New York to Los Angeles. Connect with an even bigger audience, and show what Shanay Morant can do on an even bigger stage.
What do you love about music and performing?
I see my music as my gift to the world, and performing is my opportunity to experience and celebrate that gift with the people who are meant to receive it. There’s something beautiful about sharing a moment, exchanging energy, and knowing that something I created can reach someone exactly when they need it.
Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?
My biggest musical inspirations are Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Anita Baker. I’ve loved Anita Baker since I was 11 years old. Her music has always made my soul happy, and there’s an emotional honesty in her voice and songwriting that has stayed with me. Michael and Janet inspire me heavily from a production and vocal arrangement standpoint. I love the creativity, detail, and freedom in their music. The way they could experiment, take risks, and still create songs that connected with people. Their lyrics and overall artistry also showed me how much you can communicate through music beyond just the words. As far as a dream collaboration, I’d love to work with Pharrell Williams. I feel like we have a similar taste in music, and I really admire his creativity and versatility. Just as importantly, energy is a big part of collaboration for me. He seems like someone who brings a great energy into the creative process, and I think we could make something really special together.
What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?
I would use it to finish The Elements of NaySoul, my four-part EP series. The first two volumes have already been released, so I’d use the prize money to complete the final two and invest in marketing and advertising to help the entire series reach a bigger audience. I’d also put some of the money toward touring and performing for new audiences. As an independent artist, having the resources to fund more opportunities would allow me to keep building on the momentum I’ve created this year and take my music beyond New York. For me, the prize would be an investment in music I’ve already been building and the next phase of my career.
