About June, Always

June, Always is where I put the things I can’t leave alone. I write indie-pop about relationships, memory, and the thoughts that keep circling back. I’m excited to keep growing the project and seeing what people connect with along the way.

Learn More About June, Always

What makes you the Next Music Star?

I think what makes me the next music star is the way I look at experiences that are common and find a unique perspective on them. June, Always is built around memory, relationships, grief, attachment, and the feelings that tend to linger after something has ended. I’m really interested in what sits underneath those experiences and why they affect us the way they do. Sometimes that means looking at what’s happening emotionally or psychologically, or finding a different way to tell the story. I care a lot about lyrics, but I also want every song to have its own personality. My goal is to make music that feels deeply personal while still giving people a place to recognize parts of their own lives in it.

What do you love about music and performing?

What I love most about music and performing is the way it connects people. A song can start from a small piece of your own life, and then someone else hears it and recognizes something from theirs. I love that something can mean one thing to me when I write it and something completely different to the person listening. Performing makes that connection even more special because you get to experience it in real time and see people respond to something that once only existed in your head.

Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?

The 1975 is probably my biggest inspiration. I’ve loved them since 2013, and one of the things I admire most is the way they can write about really serious or complicated subjects and still pair them with music that feels upbeat, energetic, and addictive. I love that contrast. I’m also really inspired by The Japanese House, Djo, Lizzy McAlpine, and The Band Camino. Getting to work with any of them would honestly be a dream. I’d love to see what could come out of being in a room with artists whose work has shaped the way I think about music.

What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?

I’d put the $10,000 right back into the music. I’m still building June, Always independently, so that money would give me room to make better videos, finish and release more songs, pay the musicians and producers I work with fairly, and invest in live performance without having to rush every decision around cost. I’d also love to put some of it toward creating a really strong visual world around the next few releases. More than anything, it would give me the freedom to keep making the kind of work I want to make and give it the best chance to reach people.
