What makes you the Next Music Star?
I think it’s finally time for me to make something beautiful out of how broken I’ve felt trying to pursue this passion and live out the dreams I’ve had since my childhood. I want to be an example to the people out there, like me, who thought they would never make it through the hardest times in life - let alone make it to see the day where their dreams were fulfilled. I wish more people knew my story so that it gave them the confidence in realizing that - if I can do it - so can you. I want to encourage all artists out there to keep fighting and striving towards what they want in life and to never give up.
What do you love about music and performing?
Music has always been there for me. I’ve never grown as close to a person as I have to music. Music was both my strongest form of safety and my best friend throughout my extremely traumatic childhood. It has been a better companion and a better therapist than any living person out there. It’s gotten me through unimaginable pain and sorrow and has honestly been what’s kept me sane through recent years. Being onstage and having an opportunity to perform makes me feel at home. Music is so beautiful because it’s for everyone - it can be whatever you want it to be. Music is beautiful and musicians are beautiful and I love being a part of this beautiful artistic world.
Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?
From the beginning of my passion for music, Twenty One Pilots has been my greatest inspiration. There was a 2-year period of time when I was in middle school where I only, and I mean ONLY listened to their music. I had their albums on vinyl, and I would play them daily until they got worn down. I think their story is inspiring. I truly owe an enormous chunk of credit to Tyler Joseph for teaching me how to be a good lyricist, and to be unapologetically myself without fear of what others may think. The line of attention they draw between mental health and how to be an artist despite those struggles has been a truly admirable thing that helped me tremendously in finding my voice in this industry. All I want is to inspire artists just like me in the way that Twenty One Pilots inspired me through my path in music.
What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?
I’ve been homeless since I was 17 - I’m 22 now. I got my electric Schecter guitar and my acoustic that I’d been gifted for my 14th birthday stolen at the beginning of this year. I think I would first find a stable place to live, and second - get new instruments so I can continue writing and doing what I love. And if I win, you best believe I’m getting a seafood boil to celebrate as soon as I leave the venue.
