What makes you the Next Music Star?

I’m the next music star because I’ve been on a journey to return to the stage following a collapse of my music career due to emotional exhaustion and burnout over twenty years ago. After the hustle and grind that helped me achieve regular rotation on over 250 college and community radio stations, I gained the opportunity to work with international recording artists. I regrettably walked away from it all to focus on my mental health. After years of mentorship, learning new coping strategies, and gaining self-compassion for past mistakes, I’ve started to rebuild my career as a singer/songwriter. I believe my story serves a wide population of fans who struggle with the pressures of burnout and the stigma of seeking help for their mental health. I offer a lesson in grit and perseverance that serves a wider range of people and will translate into a deeper connection with music fans of all ages.

What do you love about music and performing?

What I love about music and performing is that music is transcendental. It gives us a primal instinct to feel things that our logical minds often prohibit us from feeling. We feel inspired, we cope, we dance, we scream - losing our self-consciousness. Nothing else in our existence creates such an involuntary and healthy expression of ourselves as music does. The ability to write and perform a song that can move people like that is like finding your place in the universe. We rarely get to know how we’ve affected someone else. Our contribution to another’s well-being is often silent. However, with music, the energy we give off as performers and the energy an audience gives back through their singing, dancing, or applause is why performing for people is so rewarding.

Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?

The way I write for myself and what I listen to are often opposites. My biggest musical inspirations span multiple decades and genres. The Beatles, Queen, KISS, Metallica, The Ramones, Guster, Tracy Chapman, and Def Leppard are some of my early influences, and for different reasons. Wet Leg, Rachel Chinouriri, and Lola Young are modern artists that help me think differently about writing in today’s music industry and inspire me to evolve my writing style. When I think of collaboration, I picture a jam session with Wet Leg because of their raw energy. It would be great to discover more about their style of songwriting and performing.

What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?

I have a combined book and album that I plan to release about building resilience as a creative entrepreneur. The $10,000 will not cover all of the costs, but it will go towards the final production and marketing costs of releasing this combined project and promoting it. The exposure, connections, and marketability of being the Next Music Star will help propel this launch and create several opportunities that can help other creative entrepreneurs avoid burnout while discovering new strategies for pursuing and achieving their dreams.
