What makes you the Next Music Star?
I’ll tell you one thing it isn’t: talent. Don’t get me wrong, I have talent. But a lot of people do, and some people have more raw talent than I do. Talent alone isn’t what makes D’Entendre. I have a way of singing songs that makes them stick in people’s heads. More than that, contradiction is one of my main artistic tools. Most of my songs are built around two opposing emotions, ideas, or perspectives existing at the same time. Then you combine that with my obsession with bringing back old-school pop performance, my commitment to studying music every single day, and the fact that music is genuinely my biggest hyperfixation. I’m constantly studying why songs work, why performances work, why melodies stick, and why certain artists become unforgettable. And on top of all of that, I try to make every song feel like a movie. I don’t just want you to hear the song. I want you to see it, feel it, and experience a story while it’s playing. That combination is what makes D’Entendre.
What do you love about music and performing?
I know it’s cliché, but I love the feeling of going to a different universe. That’s part of why one of my mantras is “Beyond time and space,” because I genuinely feel like music exists beyond both. Music can’t fix everything, but I think it can help with almost anything. And with performing, I love the engagement. I can walk into a bar knowing I don’t even want to be there, then I step on that stage and everything changes. The lights, the movement, the music, the crowd, all of it comes together. My favorite part might actually be getting offstage, watching a video somebody recorded, and thinking, “Wow. I’m watching a superstar right now.” Sometimes I see things I need to improve, but every once in a while I watch myself and think, “Jesus Christ, I was MOVING.” Then I just hope I made Michael Jackson and James Brown proud.
Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?
I always say my three biggest inspirations are Juice WRLD, Michael Jackson, and Olivia Rodrigo, but honestly, it goes way beyond those three. Whitney Houston, Biggie Smalls, 2Pac, Brent Faiyaz, Katy Perry, Freddie Mercury and Queen, Ray Charles, James Brown, and even the music I hear in Marvel movies have all influenced me in different ways. Honestly, almost every song I hear and love teaches me something. Some days it feels like I have this entire historical ecosystem of music running through me, especially everything that came before me and everything that came out of the 1950s onward. As far as dream collaborators, I’ve already named a lot of artists, both living and gone. For newer artists, I’d love to work with Adèla or Chappell Roan. If I could work with an established artist, Kendrick Lamar would be incredible.
What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?
Honestly, I don’t know exactly what I would do with $10,000 until I actually have it. I’d want to do some serious research first and figure out where it could make the biggest difference. I might pay my rent ahead of time and take some financial stress off myself. I might use it to relocate to California and put myself closer to more opportunities. Or I might invest a large portion of it directly into my music and my career. Whatever I decide, I know the money would have one of two purposes: either helping make this dream happen, or taking enough stress off my life that I can pursue the dream more effectively. Ideally, it would do both.
