What makes you the Next Music Star?
Being in the competition, right? What makes me the next star is my penmanship, the life-long engagement to Music where I knew there was something between us; she knew too. No matter where I went, what I did, who I was with, one decision never changed and that was keeping Music as close to me as possible. I like going back through my old lyrics and breaking down all the near-rhymes and unorthodox song-structure. Imagine Dr. Seuss let Ice Cube stay with him for a summer and Cube invited Tupac and for some odd reason Shakespeare keep popping up uninvited.
What do you love about music and performing?
I like how Music feels like a faith, how it grounds me when nothing else can. The reminder that I matter and belong is always screaming from my pen, my pad, my catalog. I like how Music is patient with me. Performing is dope to me because, as a fan of Music, I enjoy seeing a collective head bop or vibe. I recently hosted my first show where I had stage time too. Seeing all the smiles, the head-rocking, people having fun—from the stage this time—was just so fun. And of course, seeing that happen when I performed MY Music gave me so much respect for art.
Who are your biggest music inspirations and dream collaborators?
Malcolm X, Tupac, Ice Cube, Basquiat, Kanye and Jay Z—they all have a way with words and specific art that invokes straight flames and motivation. Each has something non-negotiable about their character and expression. Basquiat and I would bring a different kind of experience to what art does. But, picture this—Muddy Waters on the guitar, Howlin’ Wolf for the back vocals and Baby Boo on the mic.
What would you do with the $10,000 Grand Prize?
I’d put the $10,000 into upgrading Substance Controlled’s infrastructure for better equipment and connection pipelines and building the Baby Booder Brand, and contributing to community service in my county.
